Environmental Criteria

Hotels that are included in the list of the GreenHotels, satisfy in a lower or higher degree certain environmental criteria, that were chosen by the team of GreenHotels from a broader group of criteria that have been proposed by the International Tourism Partnership, ITP and various sustainability standards.

The criteria selection has been done based on the conditions that prevail in Greek tourism sector, as well as on the existing infrastructure and the opportunities that are presenting in the Greek tourism sector.

The selected criteria cover the following four (4) environmental issues that are further analyzed:

Energy Saving

  1. Make use of renewable energy sources
  2. Use of energy- efficient light bulbs at hotel area, both interior and exterior
  3. Installing motion detector sensors, time clocks or photocells at public spaces of the hotel to ensure that the lights are on, only for the time period that is needed
  4. Installing thermostatic controls and time clocks in the guest rooms and at the public spaces of the hotel for monitoring and autonomy of the heating and cooling system
  5. Use of room-based keycards so as to operate the energy control unit - lighting, heating or cooling
  6. Make use of Energy efficient electric and electronic equipment (Energy Class A)
  7. Adequate thermal insulation of the hotel unit
  8. Providing information both to employees and to customers about how to save energy through edited notices around the hotel unit
  9. Keep the files of the maintenance records of the hotel updated

Water Saving

  1. Hotel’s water supply is derived by legal licensed source or/and the public network
  2. Towel and sheet re-use program
  3. Established water consumption system in the building in order to be detected and repaired immediately even the slightest leak
  4. Make use of water- saving technologies at the bathrooms: i.e. self- closing percussion or push taps that close automatically after a limited period of time, toilets with a dual flush option, shower heads which incorporate a vacuum flow valve that aerates and compacts the water, etc.
  5. Communicate to both staff and customers the water saving technologies that are being used

Maximum Rate of second environmental issue: 18

Waste Management

  1. Active recycle program about:
    • Paper
    • Plastic
    • Glass
    • Aluminum
    • Batteries
    • Cooking oils
  2. Compost organic waste such as fruit and vegetables peelings
  3. Implementation of a recycling program registered by the local authorities
  4. Use eco friendly detergents for your daily needs

Environmental Policy and Management

  1. Hotel’s licenses are all up to date
  2. Environmental management of the hotel is supervised by a competent department which is consisted of either by people from the hotel staff either by a specialized company or a combination of both.
  3. The environmental operational policy and management of hotel, is being communicated to the whole staff so as all of them to act on the same basis and towards the same target: that of protection of the environment
  4. Staff training on environmental management
  5. The environmental operational policy and management of hotel, is being communicated to the customers. Also, hotel staff motivates them so as to adopt eco-friendly practices not only for the duration of their staying but also to their daily life
  6. Provide customers with an environmental questionnaire so as to learn from them and have a remarkable feedback
  7. Use and promote local products, cooperate with certified suppliers
  8. Smoking is not allowed in hotel’s public spaces
  9. Hotel has been recently eco certified, e.g. ISO 14001, EMAS, Eco Label

For each one of the hotels that are being examined so as to join GreenHotels network, Greenhotels’ team checks which and how many of the above criteria, this hotel satisfies. Each criterion has its own degree. Thus, the aggregation of  criteria that are being fulfilled, results to the total rating of the hotel. Hotels that are members of Greenhotels network belong to one of the following four categories (green classification):

  • GREENHOTEL
  • ECO CLASS A
  • ECO CLASS B
  • ECO CLASS C
